Description
The Phoenix Garden is a small community garden tucked behind the Phoenix Theatre, between Soho and Covent Garden: a patch of green just off Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road, where you can sit down among the plants away from the West End crowds.
It is run by volunteers, local residents and workers, as a garden for wildlife, with ponds, shrubs and grassy corners. A small event space, opened in 2017, hosts community events, and the garden has won the Camden in Bloom prize for best environmental garden six times.
Its name fits. The site was bombed in 1940, then became a car park, and only in 1984 was it turned into a garden. Of the seven community gardens founded around Covent Garden in those years, it is the only one to survive. Film fans may spot it in "Last Christmas" (2019).
