Description

SEA LIFE London Aquarium is housed in County Hall on the South Bank, a few steps from the London Eye: a walk through sharks, rays, jellyfish and penguins that makes a good couple of hours for families, rain or shine.

The highlights are the underwater tunnel, with sharks gliding overhead, the Shark Walk, the big Pacific Ocean tank and the ray lagoon. The colony of gentoo penguins arrived from Edinburgh Zoo in 2011.

Behind the glass there is serious work too: the aquarium takes part in breeding programs for Cuban crocodiles, seahorses and jellyfish, and its classrooms welcome tens of thousands of schoolchildren a year.

In 2005 three robot fish built at the University of Essex swam among the real ones. Their creator wanted to combine "the speed of tuna, acceleration of a pike, and the navigating skills of an eel."
