A beautiful and historic burial ground

It may seem strange for a cemetery to be a tourist attraction, but Highgate Cemetery is no ordinary burial ground. Many famous people, among them Karl Marx, George Eliot, Michael Faraday and Radclyffe Hall, are buried there.

You can wander through the wooded and atmospherically overgrown East Cemetery and take a guided tour of the West Cemetery, a huge landscaped necropolis that was the most fashionable final resting place for the good and the great of Victorian and Edwardian England. It is still a working cemetery, so consideration must be taken when visiting, and it closes during burials, so call ahead.
