Description

The UK is home to a unique cemetery owned by the Crown: a 19th-century boneyard covering 16 hectares and evoking a mysterious atmosphere. Its most renowned inhabitant is suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, but it is also known as a possible source of inspiration for Beatrix Potter. Having grown up in the area, Potter may have noticed several of the names on the headstones, including names that also appear in her books, such as George Nutkins, Mr McGregor, Jeremiah Fisher, Tommy Brock, and Peter Rabbet. The chapel and colonnades at one end of the cemetery were built in the style of St Peter’s in Rome.
