Description

The heart of the city's Bangladeshi-Sylheti community

Old Londoners used to call this street Whitechapel Lane, but this soon changed, as the former brick and tile manufacturing began its activity in the 15th century, and the street was paved using the local brick earth deposits. Now Brick Lane is home to London's Bangladeshi-Sylheti community.

Attractions include some of the city's best curry houses, the Brick Lane Market, La Neuve Eglise, the nightclub 93 Feet East and The Vibe Bar, and Spitalfields. And for a gruesome detail... it's said that Jack the Ripper killed Emma Elizabeth Smith in Osborn Street, the part of Brick Lane that meets Whitechapel High Street.
