Description

Completed in 1701, the Grade I–listed Sephardic synagogue is a remarkable example of British history, being the first to be built in Britain after the return of the Jews in 1657 when Oliver Cromwell allowed them freedom of worship. Uniquely in Europe, it has maintained regular services for over 300 years. Its resemblance to a Protestant church is no surprise, given that the architect, Joseph Avis, was a Quaker and purposefully drew inspiration from Wren’s City churches. Tours, which are included with admission, take place at 11am on Sunday, and 11.30am on Wednesday and Friday.
