Description
Wicked the Musical in London, at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, looks at The Wizard of Oz from the witches' side. It is based on Gregory Maguire's novel, and the evening runs for about two and a half hours.
Two young women stand at the centre. Glinda, blonde and popular, is drawn to power; Elphaba, green-skinned and misunderstood, stays faithful to who she is even under pressure. Meeting the Wonderful Wizard tests their friendship and forces choices that send one towards becoming Glinda the Good and the other towards her fate as the Wicked Witch of the West.
Elaborate sets and strong performances carry the tale of ambition and courage, with songs such as Defying Gravity. You do not need to know the original film to follow it.
